Gifts with Meaning: Why I Include a Little Message
THE JOURNALWORDS & MEANING

Think about the things you would find hardest to part with.

The bracelet your child made at preschool. The drawing you have kept, even as the paper has softened at its edges. The bookmark they drew for you, carefully laminated so you could use it again and again.

A small handmade ceramic heart, with their name carved into the back.

The card from your partner, written in the hand you would recognise anywhere.

These things can become some of our most precious belongings. Their price could never explain what they mean to us. Their value is held in the person who made them, the moment they were given and the feeling of being loved.

This is something I think about whenever I write a little message to accompany a SUNSABI piece.

The things we keep

A preschool bracelet might have uneven beads and a knot that shows. A drawing might take a moment to recognise, until its maker explains exactly what you are looking at.

And then you see it.

You see the thought they put into it. The care with which they chose something for you. Their excitement as they placed it in your hands.

Years later, that small object can bring the moment back.

The size of their hands. The sound of their voice then. The way they looked at you, waiting for you to see what they had made.

What you keep is an object, but also a connection to a version of someone you love. A little piece of a time you cannot return to, which you can still hold.

When ordinary words become precious

Sometimes the things we treasure were ordinary when we first received them.

A card. A note left on the bench. A voicemail asking you to call back.

After someone dies, a saved voicemail can become a way to hear their voice again. We may listen for the way they say our name, the familiar rhythm of their words or a small laugh we know so well.

A few lines of handwriting can feel precious for a similar reason. Someone we love was here. They took the time to write to us. These are their words, in their hand.

There is so much of a person in the small things they leave with us.

I think that tells us something about giving, too. The words we offer someone now may stay with them in ways we cannot yet imagine.

Why a little message belongs with the jewellery

When I include a message with a SUNSABI piece, I want to give its meaning somewhere to begin.

SUNSABI thank-you note signed by Jordana, tied with natural twine on textured gift packaging in dappled sunlight.

The materials and design have a story. The words help someone find their own connection to it.

A freshwater pearl, with its uneven shape, might become a reminder to be gentle with yourself. A piece chosen to mark a year of growth might hold the reassurance that someone has noticed how far you have come.

The message gives language to the reason you reached for that particular piece.

Perhaps it says something you have been wanting to tell someone. Perhaps you recognise something you needed to hear yourself.

I want those words to feel worth keeping alongside the jewellery.

Meaning can be carried quietly

A sentimental gift can look like something you simply love wearing.

Its meaning might be known only to you and the person who gave it to you. A colour, a material or a small detail can hold a connection that nobody else would think to ask about.

When you put it on, you remember.

You remember who chose it and what they wanted you to know. On an ordinary day, that can be enough to make you feel a little closer to them.

For me, this is one of the loveliest possibilities of meaningful jewellery. It can become part of daily life, carrying a personal story without needing to explain it to everyone.

Your own words make the gift theirs

The little message I write is a starting point. There is room beside it for your own.

You don’t need to write something polished. Begin with the truth of why you chose the gift.

“This reminded me of you.”

“I’ve noticed how much you have grown this year.”

“I wanted you to have something to remind you that I’m always here.”

A shared memory, a detail you appreciate or something you have been meaning to say can give the piece its place in your relationship.

Write it in your own words. The way you naturally speak to them is part of what makes it personal.

What makes a gift valuable?

Often, it is the feeling of being known.

Someone remembered what matters to you. A child made something with you in mind. Your partner put a feeling into words. A person you love left you something you can return to.

That is why the little message matters to me.

I hope a SUNSABI piece finds its place among the things someone wants to keep close. With time, the words that came with it may become part of its story too.
